Play Sessions

Dogs deserve to play and spend time being dogs

Play is Educational

Play is Therapeutic

Play is Joyful

Play is ESSENTIAL!

At The Dog Play & Learning Centre, we understand how dogs need to play. We have studied canine play, how it develops confidence in dogs and how much dogs can learn by having the opportunity to play with other dogs. Play needs to be respectful and reciprocated or it can be damaging for your dog. Like children, it can escalate quickly and must be supervised.

That being said, 'day care' is not natural for dogs and many can find it stressful and overwhelming. We assess each dog and provide an individual care plan to ensure we meet your dogs needs. Some dogs simply do not cope and this is why we must assess all dogs first.

When dogs are enrolled, we select them to join a small group of dogs that match their personality and temperament (not based on breed or size). We rotate them around our grounds and will shampoo and shower them prior to being delivered home by us, or collected by you.

How It Works

Here at The Dog Play Centre, we understand how dogs need to play. We have studied canine play, how it develops confidence in dogs and how much dogs can learn by having the opportunity to play with other dogs. However, dogs will only play if they feel safe and secure and this is why we wanted to offer a premium form of day care. Smaller groups, qualified and dedicated staff who will work with each dogs individual care plan to provide the best care for your dog. Every dog is different and we appreciate and want to nurture that at The Play Centre.

We know how to provide appropriate play for different breeds of dogs and for dogs of different ages. We understand that not all dogs can play with every dog and take time to assess and group dogs with others who match in personality and temperament.

We have a secure one-acre site, divided into separate learning and play areas. For quieter times we have a warm, dry, comfortable building with sofas and a separate snoozy room. On weekends and evenings these areas provide training spaces for pet dog classes and courses for the professional dog trainer.

For your convenience we offer a collection and drop off service around West Lothian and the Corstorphine area of Edinburgh.

Dog Behaviourist Clare Russell DipCABT offers private behaviour consultations, classes and 1:1 training.

Dog Behaviour Consultant and Trainer, Lisa Haydon can help you get your puppy off to a great start or help your sensitive dog feel more comfortable with other dogs by offering mini socialisation sessions, appropriate play sessions, 1:1 behaviour consults and classes.

We believe we can provide your dog with a unique play and learning experience and recommend that you make an appointment to pay us a visit during opening hours.

We are used to caring for a variety of breeds and needs. If your dog has any special requirements that we can help with, let us know. Our main focus is canine behaviour and we monitor all the dogs to ensure they are safe and happy. Our aim is to offer a modern, ethical and loving centre of play!

We don’t want to merely look after your dog, we want to ensure your dog’s specific needs are met here and that they become and remain a stable and happy dog in all environments.

The Small Print

We request all owners bring their dogs for a visit before registering with us. This gives you a chance to get a feel for the place and make sure you're comfortable leaving your dog in our care. It also lets us assess your dog to ensure they'd cope well with the environment.

All dogs registering for play sessions must be fully vaccinated, including kennel cough, and must be neutered or have an implant (except young puppies). This is a ruling by our local authority and while we must adhere to this, it should be noted that neutering dogs too early (especially larger dogs) can have a lasting effect on the physiological and psychological wellbeing of the dog. We do NOT recommend neutering too early simply to have your dog cared for in a professional environment.

We have five (yes, five!) forms that need to be filled out for registration. These can be viewed below:
